Constance Halaveli Maldives takes action by doing good
Constance Halaveli Maldives is a magical hideaway of luxurious beach and water villas on the North Ari Atoll in The Maldives. Blue skies, sandy white beaches and turquoise water teeming with colorful tropical fish and marine life surround the resort. Guests can enjoy activities such as diving and snorkeling all year round while the children play at the Kids Club.
One of six Constance Hotels and Resorts properties recently re-certified by Green Globe, Constance Halaveli Maldives achieved a notable compliance score of 84% against accredited criteria.
Takako Fujii, Quality Manager at Constance Halaveli Maldives said, “The team motto for our resort is simple - Each action matters. Each kindness saves.”
Management and staff work closely together on resource management strategies, community development and environmental programs. The resort has devised an informative hour-long program to increase awareness about the importance of sustainability. The course, conducted last month in November, was attended by 237 team members (82% of total staff) as well as 15 staff from the Dive Center, a partner company. Topics covered included energy and water conservation, the benefits of a clean environment and discussing the personal attitudes of staff toward the current environmental situation in the Maldives and globally.
“The course will also form part of the orientation induction program for new staff to enhance the culture of sustainability from the beginning of their career in the company,” added Ms. Fujii.
Constance Halaveli Maldives values the importance of assisting surrounding communities and its development, especially supporting local children who are the future of the Maldives. Over the past two years, staff have organized and participated in various social initiatives such as the Ramazan Collection ( www.arc.org.mv/arc-hands-over-donations-from-ramazan-collection-to-childrens-shelters-2/ ) that was organized by the NGO called Advocating the Rights of Children (ARC). Together with its sister property Constance Moofushi Maldives, Halaveli donated 200 towels, boxes of clothes and toys and baby furniture to two orphanages. On another occasion, fourteen children from the local island of Feridhoo along with the children of Halaveli staff took part in an educational resort tour entitled “How Halaveli makes efforts to make guests and Team Members happy and environment friendly.”
In accordance with its environmental objectives, energy usage is monitored daily in each section of the property by a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system. It is then the responsibility of each respective department head to analyze any increment or decrement in energy consumption and share this information with other management staff.
The resort produces its own energy on site with the use of generators and also has its own water treatment plant that desalinates seawater. To ensure energy and water reduction targets are met, it is vital that all staff are actively engaged in the resort’s prevention maintenance program. Team members responsibly switch off any light or air conditioning unit that has been left on, turn off any running water taps and make immediate reports to the Maintenance team if repairs are required.
Green activities keep the natural environment in this delicate atoll in pristine condition. Environmental initiatives organized on a regular basis for staff include coral planting, lagoon cleaning and dive clean ups. Involving team members in green activities is the most effective way to pass the message on about the importance of maintaining surrounding areas – putting it simply “do good, feel good'.
