Constance Moofushi Maldives where sustainability is second nature
Constance Moofushi Maldives is comprised of over a hundred chic villas set on dazzling white sand or stilts that float above turquoise water in The Maldives. The resort is located on its own secluded island. And each beach or water villa features a thatched roof called cadjan, woven mats made from coconut palm leaves. Guests can enjoy snorkeling, big game fishing or diving on the spectacular South Ari Atoll in the beautiful surrounds of the Indian Ocean.
Kai Hoffmeister, General Manager at Constance Moofushi Maldives said, “I feel lucky to be living and working in an environment where it is easy for sustainability to become second nature to all of us here. Looking around the island, I see native palm trees and plants, structures made largely from local materials, and the beautiful natural blue sea with native crab and birds idyllically basking in the sun.”
Constance Moofushi Maldives is one of six Constance Hotels and Resorts properties that have recently been recertified by Green Globe. In the past year, the resort has undertaken various sustainable and innovative initiatives that have led to many successful achievements and resulted in a notable compliance score of 84%.
After its original certification in September 2014, members of the Green Team have been given Green Globe Certified badges that are proudly displayed next to their name badges on uniforms. In their daily work, the team’s badges provide an excellent means of communicating the resort’s green message to guests and spreading green awareness amongst colleagues.
“Since Constance Moofushi Maldives committed to Green Globe in 2014, we have made a whole host of additional eco-friendly improvements at the property including installing energy-efficient lighting and appliances, and switching to non-toxic cleaning products, paints and sealants. We recycle, compost and stopped using disposable dishes and cups. Furthermore, we prepare delicious nutritious dishes by using locally grown organic foods,” added Mr. Hoffmeister.
In line with its corporate social responsibilities, Constance Moofushi Maldives (CMM) has undertaken a program to significantly increase its purchasing from environmentally responsible suppliers. Last year, the hotel agreed upon a partnership with a local supplier called Hortifarm, which is a leading pioneer in the sustainable production of local fruits and vegetables. In addition, Constance Moofushi Maldives purchases fresh fish from local fishermen, who use only traditional pole and line fishing to catch their products. This ensures that the resort is doing its part to support local societies and that fish populations are sustainably managed for future generations.
At the property itself, under Chef Richard’s wing, an herb garden has been created within the resort grounds. Guests can enjoy the vibrancy, taste and texture of herbs such as Fiery Maldivian chili and basil that are freshly picked just before meals are served. The distance from ‘farm to fork’ is zero thereby reducing carbon emissions as well. So not only do foods look good and taste good, they are good.
Environmental initiatives are also of paramount importance at this island resort. Eco-events such as Earth Hour, Earth Day and World Environmental Day are held for both guests and staff throughout the year. These events are enjoyed by all and educate stakeholders about the resort’s sustainability initiatives and efforts in preserving biodiversity and the delicate Maldives environment.
On Earth Day in April this year, local island students from Himandhoo attended an environmental presentation given by CMM’s in-house Marine Biologist, Licia, about sustainability issues. This was followed by the planting of several new coconut trees as well as island and reef cleaning with resort team members. Guests also keenly participated in various activities during World Environmental Day in June. They left satisfied with their contributions toward making the planet a healthier place to live.
