First look of Kanuhura Maldives
Kanuhura Maldives, located in Lhaviyani Atoll a half an hour seaplane journey from Malé, re-opened just a few months ago following a multi-million dollar renovation. Embracing a concept of ‘barefoot luxury’ popular in high-end Maldivian resorts, the private island resort now has 110 luxury beachside bungalows and water villas. Design touches include timber floors, plump furnishings and bold splashes of colour, embracing a bohemian and fashion-conscious jet-set style. This understated luxury allows the pristine island environment to speak for itself.
Supermodel, actress and jewellery designer Erin Wasson was chosen to be the face of Kanuhura when it re-opened. She’s appeared on the cover of Vogue magazine, and she’s worked with Chanel, Lanvin and Cartier, to name but a few fashion houses. Yet Wasson’s style is all about casual chic, which suits Kanuhura down to the ground.
Accommodation at Kanuhura
The first decision guests have to make is whether they are morning or evening people, since all accommodation options come with the choice of having sunrise or sunset views.
The 59m2 beach bungalows are the most basic accommodation options at Kanuhura, offering private sea views, romantic verandas and island-chic outdoor showers.
Next up the rung are the 75m2 beach villas, with private verandas that spill onto the beach and views of perfect sunrises. The slightly larger 82m2 beach pool villas have private plunge pools and idyllic sunsets.
Water villas range from 125m2 to 135m2 in size and come with private sun decks, semi open-air bathrooms and steps that lead straight into the water. Some come with private plunge pools.
The largest accommodation options offered at Kanuhura include the grand and family villas, complete with multiple bedrooms, extensive private terraces and private swimming pools. The largest is the family beach pool villa at 385m2.
Activities at Kanuhura
The range of activities and pastimes available at Kanuhura can’t be faulted. The tropical KOKAA Spa has nine treatment rooms, yoga sessions, steam rooms and saunas. Water sports include scuba diving, snorkelling tours and big game fishing. There are also tennis facilities, an air-conditioned gym and an aerobics studio. The more romantically inclined can also go on private island picnics and sunset cruises. The kids club, Kanuhura K Club, ensures children aged four to 11 are looked after, while the teens club helps keep 12 to 17 year olds entertained.
For those who desire even more privacy, Kanuhura has its own private island getaway. Jehunuhura Island is a very short boat journey away from the main resort. With a desert island jungle feeling, guests can have a private meal on the island, or enjoy a massage or yoga session.
Food at Kanuhura
One thing is for sure: it’s impossible to
go hungry or thirsty while staying at Kanuhura, with a choice of ten dining
locations, two bars and a café.For all day dining, A Mano is a good
option, with various cooking stations offering a selection of international
cuisine. Another low key option is the resort’s café, Deli, where guests can go
for coffee, pastries or picnic baskets to take away. Other international
cuisine on the island comes in the form of Italian at Bottega and Brazilian
barbecue at Fogo.
For those who want a true taste of Maldivian cooking, Dagas is the place to go, where chefs throw a modern twist onto traditional Maldivian recipes. The beachside location makes a beautiful evening setting too. For enjoying produce grown on the island, dining at Chef’s Herbs Garden is an interesting experience. A communal table is set up among hanging herbs within the island’s herb and spice garden itself. It’s an amazing way to mingle while eating food infused with the very herbs you’re surrounded by.
For more private dining experiences at Kanuhura, having a meal on a traditional Maldivian Dhoni (boat) is the way forward. Champagne is served alongside fresh seafood and a barbecue. Alternatively, head over to Drift on Jenuhura Island for a private grill restaurant experience.
When it comes to drinking, Cowry Club is a moodily lit bar around the infinity pool, where cocktails by talented mixologists are the highlight of the menu. During the day, Iru beach bar is a low key spot to chill out with a drink in hand.
